Girls Aloud Band History and Photos
Girls Aloud are a very successful British girl-band, formed in 2002 on the talent show Popstars: The Rivals. They are the most successful British girl-band since the Spice Girls, and the most successful band ever to be created on a reality TV show. Girls Aloud have released five studio albums to date (January 2009,) the first three through Polydor records, and the latter two with the label Fascination. Four of these albums reached the top ten in the UK, and all have gone platinum (by BPI estimates) In addition; they have had 19 consecutive top ten singles, four of which went to number one. They have also released three video albums, and three tour DVDs. Girls Aloud have completed five arena tours. They have also been nominated for two BRIT awards, and received various other nominations and awards. Girls Aloud made a cameo appearance as schoolgirls in the 2007 remake of the film St Trinian’s. They also appeared in the Oasis documentary ‘Lord Don’t Slow Me Down.’ In 2006 they starred in the six part series ‘Girls Aloud: Off the Record,’ which followed them filming the video for ‘Whole lotta history,’ and making promotional appearances across the world. Early 2008 saw the members of Girls Aloud star in an episode each of ‘Passions of Girls Aloud.’ This show saw each member (minus Nadine) trying to master something they have always wanted to achieve. They have also filmed a one-off variety show ‘The Girls Aloud Party,’ which aired in December 2008. In October 2008, Girls Aloud released an autobiography entitled ‘Dreams that Glitter – Our Story,’ which was published by Bantam press. Girls Aloud has five members; Cheryl Cole, Sarah Harding, Kimberly Walsh, Nadine Coyle and Nicola Roberts. Cheryl Cole (nee Tweedy) from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, is arguably the most famous member of Girls Aloud, due to her high profile marriage to footballer Ashley Cole and her work on the X-factor. Cheryl replaced Sharon Osbourne as an X-factor judge in 2008, and her tenure proved very popular. In addition to this, Cheryl featured in the video and provided additional vocals for Will.I.Am’s 2008 hit ‘Heartbreaker.’ In 2003, Cheryl was involved in an altercation with a nightclub toilet attendant, and eventually tried and found guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. In January 2008 it was claimed that Ashley Cole had cheated on Cheryl a number of times; their marriage remains the topic of much speculation for British magazines and tabloids. Kimberly Walsh, born in Bradford, had minor acting roles before joining Girls Aloud. She is currently dating former popstar Justin Scott. Controversially, she was once caught on camera smoking marijuana, an act which she later issued an apology for in The Sun. Sarah Harding, from Cheshire, previously worked as a promotions girl and was part of the little-known band Project G. Sarah was chosen as the last member of Girls Aloud. In 2008, she collaborated with The Filthy Dukes on the track Real Wild Child, sparking rumours that she may leave Girls Aloud to pursue a solo career. Nadine Coyle, from Derry (NI) had been a winner on the Irish version of Popstars, and selected to join the band Six. However, due to controversy over her age (she was 16, the minimum age was 18) she left the group. Nadine lives in Los Angeles, where she had a high profile relationship with actor Jesse Metcalf. Nicola Roberts, from Stamford (Lincs) is the youngest member of Girls Aloud. During the selection process on Popstars, Nicola was eliminated, but got another chance when another contestant pulled out. Nicola had a public dispute with radio DJ Chris Moyles after he insulted her looks and ‘sour’ demeanor. Nicola has also launched her own range of make-up for pale skinned women.

Girls Aloud History and Musical Success
If you haven’t yet heard of Girls Aloud, chances are you will soon. They’re the very popular result of a British TV show that sought to produce both a new boy band and girl band in competition for a top-selling Christmas single. The original members of this included Cheryl Cole, Nicola Roberts, Nadine Coyle, Kimberley Walsh, and Sarah Harding and they’re still going strong .
Girls Aloud have many Top 10 singles and multiple albums produced since their inception in 2002 (including two number ones). The group has also managed to achieve the record for having the shortest amount of time between becoming a group and having a number one song on the UK record charts. Their success of Britain’s number one all-female singing group has come across a succession of sought-after albums, including: “Sound of the Underground” was their first album and came out in 2003, debuting at number two on the charts. Hit songs included “Girls Allowed”, “No Good Advice” and “Life Got Cold”.
In a subsequent rerelease of the album, “You Freak Me Out” came out (which was part of the soundtrack for the movie “Freaky Friday” with Lindsay Lohan, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Mark Harmon — a popular choice for American and other movie fans abroad). The album was ultimately on the charts for 20 weeks. “What Will the Neighbors Say?” came out in late 2004 and entered the charts at number six and the group began a Live tour by the same name in 2005, the same year they were name “Glamour” magazine’s “Band of the Year.” They were also up for a BRIT Award for the best pop act that year. Singles from the album included “Love Machine” and a remake of The Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand by You.” “Chemistry” was released in late 2005, but only got to number eleven on charts, lower than their previous efforts.
However, it included popular singles like “Long Hot Summer” and “Whole Lotta History.” With a tour also of the same name, the popular Girls appeared before over 100,000 fans and won the praises of many tabloid magazines. “The Sounds of Girls Aloud” was released in 2006 and unlike the girls’ previous albums, successfully debut at number one. The limited edition CD of the album has even become a collectors’ item with its singles “Singapore” and “Hanging on the Telephone”, one of Blondie’s previous hits. Other hit singles on the album included “Something Kinda Ooooh” and for those of us who still sing along with our memories of 80’s hits, they remade Tiffany’s “I Think We’re Alone Now”, which made it to number four on the charts.
Girls Aloud are fans of remakes, remaking Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way” on this album; it soon became their third number one hit. The girls went on tour again in 2007 with a tour of the same name. “Tangled Up” came out in late summer, 2007 and eventually went to number five. It’s singles included “Sexy! No No No…” and “Can’t Speak French” and also named their longest tour, 35 venues in the end.
“Out of Control” was released in 2008 and debuted at number one. It’s first single, “The Promise” backed the groups promise to be exciting and thrilling by debuting at number one on the British charts. It became the fastest selling single up to that date for 2008, selling 77,000 singles during the first week of release. Due to the album’s success, the Girls Aloud will play at Wembley Stadium with the hit group Coldplay in 2009.
The girls are known for the stylish, trendy looks and have also been seen in popular TV shows in the United Kingdom. These have included documentary-style shows and variety-type shows that included other stars and comedy skits. They’ve also written a book, “Dreams That Glitter — Our Story,” and whether they like it or not, are always the subject of the tabloids. They are also doing endorsements for major names like Samsung and KitKat chocolate and wafer bar, the number one selling candy bar in the UK.
As shown, Girls Aloud have done many remakes of others’ hits. It’s a good thing for them though that they’ve had their music remade by popular artists including Coldplay, Billy Corgan, and the Arctic Monkeys. Girls Aloud are also well-liked by Franz Ferdinand and James Morrison. It’s no wonder the group is so popular. They’re attractive, trendsetters, can dance, and have great talent.
Their behind-the-scenes support is also outstanding with edgy producers for their videos and choreography. They’ve beaten records set by the popular US group Destiny’s Child (where Beyonce began her career) and The Spice Girls (who were another top pop British girl group of the 1990’s who also demonstrated the staying-power Girls Aloud are building).
